The course ends on 14 November, and the balance is very positive. The MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) “Climate change in school media”, began 5 October 2015 on the digital platform Miríada X and gathered more than 700 applications.
Dedicated to the use of media for the teaching of climate change in the classroom, the course promotes a free and massive teaching format, aimed at people from all over the world and with the possibility of autonomous management of the number of hours of study.
This MOOC is primarily directed at the community of primary and secondary school teachers, to show them the advantages of the use of media in teaching climate change (and science in general).
“Climate change is an issue of national and global interest, but schools are failing in teaching the theme to students. This MOOC innovates by providing teachers with a set of strategies to implement in the classroom, based on climate change and the media”, said José Azevedo, coordinator of Clima@EduMedia and lecturer at the Faculty of Arts & Humanities of the U. Porto (FLUP). “Trainees have made very positive remarks and have mentioned the relevance and originality of the proposed approach” he then added.
The MOOC ends on 14 November, date in which a classroom session will take place, with the participation of the trainees who have expressed their intention to obtain a Continuing Training Course for Teachers Certificate, of 25 hours.
The session will be attended by the vice-chancellor of the U.Porto, Sebastião Feyo de Azevedo; the deputy vice-chancellor for Educational Technologies, José Martins Ferreira; who will approach the U.Porto’s strategy in the area of long-distance education, as well as the scientific coordinators of the course—António Guerner, professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the U.Porto (FCUP) and José Azevedo, professor at FLUP. Luísa Aires, of the Open University, will also intervene as speaker, explaining the pedagogical advantages of the MOOC format.
Applications will remain open until 14 November 2015, the last day of the MOOC.
