The guarantee is given by Nuno Moutinho, director of this educational institution that achieved the victory in Category B (Mitigation) of the school competition "Climate Change" organized by the Clima @ EduMedia project.
The school is applying the 30 thousand euros prize in the construction of an ecological building, using a construction model based on the reuse of materials and the sustainable management of resources. The building of the new school library, which will also house a multi-use space, will have a landscaped roof and will be decorated with furniture also made by recycled materials.
"So far, all the stages foreseen in the initial proposal have been carried out successfully," says Nuno Moutinho. "A little more than a month after the end of the building works, and with the help of teachers and students, the construction of this new “green” space of the school is practically finished", emphasizes the director of Terras de Santa Maria School.
The next steps are the construction of the building's roof and the organization of an inauguration event open to the community. In the meantime, students and teachers will be involved in the dissemination of the project and in the production of an e-book that documents all stages of construction.

"The school community is adopting the Getting Greener mentality" According to the school’s Direction, the intention of raising awareness of this issue of climate change was "one of the guidelines of the educational project for this school year". As a result, "students organized a campaign of awareness and collection of cans that are being used in the construction work, helped in the transport and placement of used tires on the walls of the building and, with the support of the school's Communication and Image team, students and teachers have been producing contents related to climate change, and documenting all the stages of the construction of the new building for the school newspaper, ABC." |

Asked about the effective impact of this project, Nuno Moutinho answers that "the Getting Greener mentality is already translated into concrete and relevant initiatives, such as the application to the Ilídio Pinho Foundation competition with science projects that aim, for the most part, to climate change adaptation and mitigation actions, such as implementing procedures to reduce waste and increase school energy efficiency".
The "Climate Change" school competition aimed precisely to put pupils and teachers from schools that took part in Climate@EduMedia project to think about the importance of mitigation and adaptation to climate change, challenging them to think of concrete measures to implement in their schools. The winners were announced in March 2016 and may implement the proposed measures until the end of March 2017.
